How Terminal keeps hundreds of telematics integrations running

Terminal is a universal API for commercial vehicle telematics, connecting its customers to more than 325 providers through one integration and processing about two terabytes of data a day.

Terminal uses Polylane across AWS, Datadog and Better Stack to detect when something breaks, trace it to the cause and open the fix.

The challenge

Every telematics provider Terminal supports is an external system that can change, slow down or fail on its own schedule. When one does, Terminal's customers feel it, and finding the cause means digging through logs, deploys and provider behaviour at once.

“We connect our customers to hundreds of telematics providers, and any one of them can change under us. Polylane tells us what broke, why, and which change caused it, and usually has the fix ready before we've opened a dashboard.”
Connor Giles Co-founder & CTO at Terminal

Why Polylane

Polylane maps Terminal's AWS estate, 11,996 cloud resources in the first month, and reads the telemetry Terminal already sends to Datadog and Better Stack. When something breaks, it connects the error in production to the deploy and the line of code behind it, and opens the fix when the cause is in Terminal's code.

How Terminal uses it

Issues land in Slack with the root cause attached. Fixes land in GitHub ready for review, and every pull request gets a Polylane review against live production: 92 in the first month.

The results

In the first month, Polylane monitored 11,996 cloud resources, detected 382 anomalies and surfaced 53 issues across Terminal's integrations. It opened 26 fixes with a median of 35 minutes from detection to a pull request ready for review.
